BitDefender LinuxDefender

The BitDefender Unices team is re-mastering a rescue CD based on Knoppix Live CD. The re-mastered CD will be capable of scanning and disinfecting all your existing hard drives (including NTFS partitions) before your OS boots. To use this rescue CD, you need to be familiar with a few basic notions, such as: what is a partition and what type of internet connection you have. Another condition would be that you should not be afraid to use the console to type commands and read the manual.

The new CD will provide  a few tools for data rescue, partition size changes and basic forensic networking. Its main feature is that after the boot, all detected and mounted partitions on your hard drive will be automatically scanned by our antimalware scanner, bdgui. Bdgui is a frontend for bdscan and it was designed to make the disinfection procedure easier for the common user. Plus it looks cool  :-) .

Of course, if you are a power user and something is wrong with the automount procedure, you can always use the mighty console. For example, if one of the NTFS partitions is unclean, the automount tool will not mount it and you will not be able to access the data on it. In this case you must use the console to clean it up, using the ntfsfix utility. Then you  just mount the partition and scan it with bdscan. For more information, please read the nice pdf we have created.

It goes without saying that using the rescue CD efficiently requires a virus signature update, which can be easily initiated from the CD startup image. If you have a LAN connection and you are using dhcp, the scripts in the image will install the latest virus definitions. If this fails because you have a static IP, a modem card, or another Internet connection type, there is an icon on your desktop which you can use to configure your Internet connection.

You can also configure a wifi card. If it does not work, ndiswrapper is your friend. With this tool (available in the fluxbox menu Admin) you can install Windows drivers for your wireless card. It is also possible to install the latest virus definitions using the cumulative.zip which contains the latest updates. The update procedure is very simple, just type the location of this file and we will do the rest.

If you want to try it out, the latest iso can be downloaded from here.

    Hi!
I do technical software support here in Cusco,Peru where computer problems related to malware in general are very, very common. I`ve tested your Rescue CD on a number of computers, particularly newest laptops and I have to say the following:
The product seems to be better than from other antivirus companies, however it looks that there are a few deficiencies.
1.When the program loads up it starts the antivirus scan immediately by itself.
2.When updating the virus signatures manually it does not show the latest date of update on the display although it is updated.
3.In the safety mode it does not update manually . The error message is, File doesn`t exist!
4.And finally, there is no option of choosing scanning exclusively MBR without scanning partitions.
    5.Otherwise the product is great!

Please, consider fixing these problems in the future.

    Regards.
